Besenbinder Hof

Classic Elegance

Herman Höger designed the building in 1927 as the City of Hamburg’s Health Department Administrative Offices. It is one of the best examples of brick expressionism in the city with vertical structured pillars and high ceilings. Herman Höger was responsible for many brick building including social housing schemes and along with his brother Fritz Höger were, in part responsible for changing the face of the city from white plaster to red brick.
During the lifespan of the 6.300 sq.m building the sanitary and other features were removed and modernized to the standards of the time. Fortunately there were enough clues to develop a new story to augment the existing entrance halls, office spaces and sanitary facilities. Design details were influenced by historical aspects and re-interpreted with an elegance and warmth with great respect for the building.
